Had nine children, of whom four died before him, three in child birth. Owned clothing shops. Served on the German side in the First World War. Deeply religious; can be seen in a photograph of a group of soldiers as t he one man wearing a large, grey beard. Died of colon cancer, four years after an operation. His wife, who had nursed him for several years, was at the grocery store when he died.
