About Pam, Albert
Biography
Albert was born in Litomsyl in the Cz Republic around 1798. He was Samuel Pam's brother. A family tree dated 1906 suggests that his first name was Abraham. Albert appears to be the first member of the family to have settled in the UK. We do not have a birth certificate but rely on later census information to indicate his birth date.
It is not clear when he immigrated to the UK but we know from his UK Nationalisation Certificate [14.2.1847] that he was working as a Surgeon Dentist and Dispenser from 1822 in Hastings, East Sussex. He was then only 23 years of age. In 1834 he was appointed as a Dentist to his Royal Highness and Princess Victoria when the Royal Family resided at St Leonards or Hastings. One reason for being appointed may have been due to his German / Austrian background. Eva Smirzitz, a 3rd cousin, in an email dated 8.6.10 comments that her grandmother recalled that Albert was a trained 'glazier' and 'Bader' prior to moving to the UK, giving medical aid and dentistry to poor people.
Ten year census returns between 1841 and 1881 record him having a Chemist shop at the following High Street addresses in Lewes. 59 High Street between 1851-1871, 44 High Street between 1880 - 1886.
Albert was always thought to be a single man. However Louisa Ann was born on the 15th January 1841 to a Marie Collins. Albert Pam appears in her birth Cirtificate as the father. Louisa died aged 30.
Eva Smirzitz states that he adopted a child named Claire. She later became a ladies companion to Adele Pam in Paris. Adele's granddaughter Jaqueline Porche confirmes this. She remembers that she was called 'Tatti'. She used to visit the UK occassionally. Jacqueline does not know when she died or where she was buried.
We have a number of photographs of Albert with his nephews, Leopold and Jacob. He appears to have been the first member of the family to immigrate to the UK. His Niece Mathild Pam[Tiddy] said that he was among the first in the UK to be registered as a Chemist.
Albert died aged 87 in Lewis. He was buried in accordance with the Jewish faith at the Brighton Synagogue. He left a will valued at £292, equivilant to £23,000 [RPI in 2010]. His executor was Leopold Pam.
There are lots of unanswered questions about Albert - Why did he decide to immigrate to the UK? What made him settle in a small county town of Hastings? Did he support Maria and his daughter Louisa?
