Abraham Rosenthal

Abraham Rosenthal Died "The Hero's Death" as a soldier fighting for Germany in WWI. He was fighting as a Fusilier light infantry foot soldier near the towns of Nesle and Roye in the region of the Somme River,120 kilometers north of Paris when he was shot in the stomach and later died of his wounds. His official Death Notice says that he died in the military field hospital number 9 in Nesle France, of the 18 army corps at 10:30 AM. Some sources have it that he died of his wounds at home in Mittelsinn, 500 kilometers to the east, one year later but the death notice quotes a letter received in Mittelsinn from a commander in Nesle announcing his death there. It is said about him that he was a very good looking person. His place of burial is unknown. His grave cannot be found but it is known that German Soldiers who were buried in Nesle were moved during the 1920's to Manicourt, France, some 3 kilometers to the west. Only graves that were identified by names or codes received individual graves. If identification was missing (i.e. by bad weather) or if soldiers shared a grave (because of war battles), these remains were place in graves for “The Unknown Soldier”. Abraham's grave cannot be found there but so are many other soldier's graves who were moved from Nesle and other cemeteries to Manicourt..

Abraham Rosenthal was my great uncle. My father, Martin Rosenthal, told me that Abraham's name was enscribed on a memorial monument as a war hero (I don't know exactly where). When the Nazis came to power, the presence of a Jewish name on a monument to war heroes was an embarrassment to them and his name was chiseled off.
