About Abraham Stump

I located the property of Abraham Stump (Jr) in Canada as being about 1mile south of Maple, Ontario -to the west side of the road. The King offered 200Acre Lots, which Abraham obtained (Lot 13, Concession IV -Vaughan twp, York Co - east of Hwy 4, north of Hwy 7), passed on to his son, Samuel, who died about 1833 and passed it on to Solomon (my ancestor)(inheritance also included the care of the brother, David -labeled as "mentally deficient"). Information has come from Ruth

Burkholder, one of the top genealogists of Ontario -whose husband was descended from Elizabeth Stump (dau of Abraham) who married Michael Burkholder (brother of Solomon's wife, Anna). Michael and Elizabeth

Burkholder held the next Lot (12) south of Abraham. Lots are rectangular -about twice as wide as deep.

Solomon Stump was living west of Brampton ONT (Lot 6 Concession III, Chinguacousy twp, Peel Co, east of Hurontario Street) near his brother Joseph, before he inherited the home property (both properties look like good land). Joseph seems to be the critical person of the whole family. At the Jail in Brampton (historical museum now), asking on the Stumps, the librarian went back into the archives, and came running out: "You are UEL!!!!" - "What's UEL?" - "United Empire Loyalist!" -seems he was a Ranger in the British Army during the American Revolution- and his family eventually had to move up to those good lands in Canada- Tory!

I have done considerable on Solomon's family - he had 2 sons and 9 daughters! - and only lists them in his will by their given names. I have information on the sons, and I think I have identified all 9 daughters (not a lot on some of them), but they all came down to Elkhart County IN -and some moved on the Marshall and Stark Cos. I have some info on Solomon's youngest brother, Daniel Stump - River Brethren Bishop, who also came down to Elkhart Co (Carl Stump's line) The two brothers lived across the road from each other about 3 miles east of the Union Center Church of the Brethren. Solomon's family were all Brethren, and many of them are buried in the cemetery there. Son-in-law

John Burkholder (a nephew in the Burkholder family), was the first pastor of the Union Center Church.

Merle C Rummel

Gen III.
Abraham Stump, b. 1764 Heidelberg Twp, Lancaster Co, PA, d. 01 Dec 1820

Vaughan twp, York Co, Ontario, Canada.

I have seen numerous people report the dates of birth for this Abraham in PA and death in Canada, but none have provided a record or citation I can verify. Regardless, I take for granted the dates are probably reasonable. That said, Merle Rummel wrote in the Brethren Encyclopedia that Abraham was the son of Casper, based on research by Rev Carl Stump - who is now deceased (which I think Merle has since revised). I believe based on the baptism record for an Abraham in 1764, he is the son of Abraham above.

Merle Rummel further writes Abraham, married Mary Meekley, and in 1804 they relocated to Vaughan twp, York Co, Ontario, Canada, but he didn't provide a date of death. It is this Abraham Stump who was the progenitor of the Indiana Stumps (based on notes of Merle).
