About Abraham Winer

  • Probate notice gives Abraham and Annie's place of marriage as "Russia"; likely married in 1889/90.
  • Moved first to UK (circa 1890), then to South Africa in 1901.
  • His original barbershop was in Hoxton, London. The future Edward VII (at the time, Prince of Wales) was apparently a regular customer (as told by Abraham to his grandson Joe Lichtman in the 1930s). It is interesting that his naturalization record from 1902 contains a handwritten note (initials at the bottom aren't legible) that reads "I don't think it is necessary to obtain the usual police report" (!!!)
  • Family name was formally changed from Winogrodski to Winer in South Africa at some point after 1910 (note that their naming was never fixed in spelling - I've seen Winogrodski, Winogrotski, Winogrodzki, Wingradski, Weiner, Wiener, Winer etc). A family legend holds that the government politely asked Abraham if he would consider changing the family name, because nobody could figure out how to spell it.
  • The surnames Zwenigorodsky and Winogrodski (many different spellings) were synonymous in the Vilnius records (the town of Zvenigorodka in Ukraine has the nickname Winogrod). The original connection was made via strong DNA linkages with several members of the Zwenigorodsky family, who moved to the US in the early 20th century, and changed their name to Rosenberg. Although Abram appears in the 1907 Lithuanian records, experts on the Lithuanian Family Lists have pointed out that it was very difficult to get a name removed from those lists, and it was common for people to appear on them decades after leaving.
  • Abraham's second barbershop was in Seapoint, Cape Town
  • My grandfather (Joe Lichtman, i.e. Abraham's grandson) stayed with them when he was studying at University of Cape Town in the 1930s.
  • My father once visited the house that they used to live in on Gordon Street when it was on sale (much later on).
  • RSA death notice gave Abraham Winer's birth year/month (likely approximate) and death date, as well as date of death of Annie Winer.
  • He and his wife both are buried in the Maitland cemetery in Cape Town.
  • At various times, he was a board member of two different dividing benefits societies (a form of medical and burial insurance). They are both mentioned on his tombstone. The "The South African Hebrew Dividing Benefit Society" (see: https://www.nationalarchives.gov.za/node/10710723) and "Sons of Israel Dividing Benefit Society" (see: https://www.nationalarchives.gov.za/node/10710722) archives are both held at the Kaplan Centre, at University of Cape Town. His position on the SAHDBS is mentioned several times in the archives of the Jewish Chronicle.

Abraham Winer's Timeline

1864
1864
Vilnius, Vilnius city municipality, Vilnius County, Lithuania

Abraham Winer likely didn't know his date of birth with any degree of certainty. It is listed in a range in various documents, from 1863 to 1869 (most likely 1864/5). The only constant is that all of the documents list his wife as being one year younger.

He usually wrote the location "Wilno" as his place of origin, but this could mean either the city of Vilnius, proper, or the surrounding province ("gubernia").

In addition, it isn't clear if he was born there, or just lived there prior to immigrating (although Annie's family were definitely residents of Vilnius). He is likely related (DNA and circumstantial evidence) to the Zwenigorodsky family of Vilnius, who also intermittently were referred to as Winogrodski in the Lithuanian records.
