About Absalom Wofford

Note: Rock Creek in Present Montgomery County formed 1776 from Frederick County, which was formed in 1748 from Prince Georges County, Maryland. Absalom and Sarah had eight children, five sons and three daughters. The five sons and two of the daughters traveled to what later would be known as the Sppartanburg District of South Carolina. The five sons would one day be known as the "Spartanburg Five". Of these five sons, four are documented to have served in the Revolutionary War. One of the sisters who came to South Carolina was Hannah Wofford who married her cousin Absalom Wofford, son of William Wofford. Frederick Co. part taken from Prince Georges Co. MD. Rock Creek was in that part of Frederick which later became Montgomery Co. MD Above genealogy calls his wife Hannah Hosey (variously also Hosea, Huss, Husse). [Hussey?] Also states that some have called his wife "Sarah Bell" but she found no proof of this, and relied on old family records. The collections by the DAR of the State of Washington [1941] show that this Absalom Wofford had seven sons, and state that six of them served in the American Revolution. The seven sons are listed: Jeremiah, Absalom, William, John, James, Joseph, and Benjamin. We have no record of sons Jeremiah and Absalom in this family. It is not stated whether these two alledged sons, Jeremiah and Absalom, came with the historic "five brothers" to S.C., and a careful evaluation of records indicate that they did not come to S.C. All records show that the "five brothers" who came to S.C. were: William, John, Joseph, James, and Benjamin. A record of these two alleged sons is also not found in Maryland. These "five brothers:, so often referred to in connection with the early Woffords in S.C., are sons of this Absalom Wofford. Coming to South Carolina a number of years earlier than the "five brothers" was William Wofford, brother of Absalom, with a number of sons. He was an uncle of the "five brothers." William Wofford had sons Jeremiah and Absalom, and we are sure that these two sons have been confused with the family of the "five brothers." James Wofford, son of said William Wofford, has also at times been confused with James Wofford, son of this Absalom Wofford. This latter James Wofford is one of the "five brothers." Both William and Absalom Wofford had sons named Joseph. Concerning the name of the wife of Absalom Wofford: horse-hos-hose= See os. os= See ans-as Ans-os=From Old Norse Asketil (ass; a heathen God; ketill meaning "cauldron") Modern variants: as-os= See ans, aesc. aesc-as-es= Old English aesc (meaning "spear", "ash"). (A History of Surnames Of the British Isles, by C. L'Estrange Ewen, p. 366). Name, with variations=Horse, Horsely, Horsey, Horsley, Hose; Hosea, Hosey (into Huss, Husse, Hussie, Hussey, etc.) (Note the conveyance under John Wofford, uncle of Absalom Wofford, wherein said John Wofford and his wife, Mary, convey land to one "John Huss". This John Huss may be the father of the wife of Absalom Wofford, who named a son John; and perhaps a brother of the wife of John Wofford. Camp-Kemp Family History by Col. Robert Neville Mann and Cathrine Cleek Mann, Vol. I, p. 61, referencing the research of Judge Zelma Wells Price. Calls Absalom Wofford's wife Hannah Hosea.
