Biography

Ada Nan Decordavilla Carver was born in 1867. Her parents were Rev. Andrew Moore Slayden and Penelope Caroline Mitchell.

Ada Nan married Randolph Orville Carver. Together they had the following children: Harold Carver, Sr; Charlie Carver. They also had Esther, Ruth, and the eldest son was killed in WWI.

She died in 1942 and was buried in Poplarville, MS, City Cemetery.

The entire community was saddened Monday when it was learned that Mrs. R. O. Carver, 74 years old, had died at her home here following an illness of approximately three months. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday morning by her former pastor, the Rev. J. P. Culpepper, and assisted by the Rev. James Horton, pastor of the Baptist church, and the Rev. S. F. Harkey, pastor of the Methodist church. Interment was in the Poplarville cemetery. Mrs. Carver was born on August 1, 1868, at Nicholson, the daughter of the late Rev. and Mrs. A. M. Slaydon. Early in life she moved with her parents to Poplarville. Before marriage she played the organ for the Methodist Sunday School in the morning and played for the Baptist Sunday School in the afternoon. After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Carver lived for a time at Logtown, moving back to Poplarville in November of 1904. Mrs. Carver was one of the best beloved ladies of the town and was known by almost everyone throughout the county. Since before her marriage up until a short time before bad health confined her to her home, Mrs. Carver has taught a Sunday School class at the Baptist church. Mrs. Carver is a past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, member of the Baptist church and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. In the latter, she was a God Star Mother, her son, Orville Carver, having lost his life in World War I. The local post of the American Legion honors the memory of her son in that the post is named for him, being known as the Orville Carver Post of the American Legion. Mrs. Carver was also a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and a chairman of the Red. Cross. Mrs. Carver was active in many phases of social, civic and church life of the town and has contributed much to the growth of her community. Survivors of Mrs. Carver include two daughters, Miss Esther Carver, Laurel, and Mrs. Jimmy Clark, Poplarville; two sons, Pete and Charlie Carver, Poplarville; and one sister, Mrs. L. A. Hoffman, Whittier, Col. Active pall bearers were members of the Orville Carver Post of the American Legion. They were: G. E. Menetre, Martin L. Smith, Joe H. Orr, E. H. Strain, I. C. Rawls, and C. L. Provost. All other members of the Orville Carver Post were honorary pall bearers.
