Adam Bothwell, Bishop of Orkney

Biographical Summary

Second son of Francis Bothwell, also a Judge, by Janet, daughter of Patrick Richardson of Meldrumsheugh, was preferred to the Bishopric of Orkney some time after the death of Bishop Reid; having been admitted to the temporality of the See on the 14th October 1559. He was one of the four Bishops who took part with the Reformation, but seems from his station to have been an object of suspicion to the Presbyterian party. He was nominated an Extraordinary Lord on the 14th January 1564, in place of Sir James Balfour promoted; and on the 13th November 1565, was admitted an Ordinary Lord, in place of the Provost of Dunglas, deceased.
