I have info on Queen Samarius Miles. In some of my info she is called Samantha "Queen Semyremas" Miles. One of Queen's sons is our grandfather, Verden Hamby who was married to our grandmother Jewell. He wasn't around much of the time. Good lookin' but a rounder. More to that story later. So...Queen is Verden's mother. She was married to Stephen Hamby(grandpa's Verden's dad) born July 1863. Queen was born November 18, 1871/Died December 4, 1944. Rockwood Roane County in Oddfellows cemetery. This was info from my mother's searching. I have pictures of tombstones but no certain who is who yet.
This story gets complicated. If I hit the wrong button I will try again. Her father was originally named Adam Addison Deffenbaugh 1836-1888. (I am copying now from Military History. Adam Addision Deffenbaugh born 27 March 1836 in Madison County Ohio, the son of Jacob Strous Deffenbaugh and Catherine Karshner. Adam enlisted on 30 August 1861. He had problems with the army, and in December 1861 was reduced from Sargeant fo Privite. On 21 October 1861, he deserted from the Washington Park USA General Hospital Cincinnati, Ohio. On 12 March 1864, he was arrested in London, Ohio. He was sent to Military Prison, in Nashville, Tennessee by order of General Courts Martial.
Adam's story is an unusual one. It seems he was married when he went into the Army. He went AWOL from the hospital and went home. While there he got into an altercation with a man and hurt him pretty badly, so he fled.... See More
His wife, Ruhamah, a mean tempered woman and a sharpshooter, got word to him that the man had died and that his life wouldn't be worth anything if he came home. It was a lie! The man had not died. Later he was arrested and sent to Millitary Prison. Meanwhile his wife remarried (without benefit of divorce from him) and had several children from her second husband. When Adam had served his sentence he returned home to find his wife married to someone else and with a bunch of kids. Adam left Ohio and returned to Tennessee where he changed his name to Edgar Joseph Miles. He said he cholse "Miles" because he was miles from home. He married a woman named Sarah Emaline Shields, and the couple had eight children. Therefore there are a bunch of Miles that are our cousins and really should be Deffenbaughs!! Adam Addision Deffenbaugh AKA Edgar Joseph Miles died on 22 November 1888, in Pine Orchard, Tennessee, at the age of fifty-two.
