About Adele "Hudie") Torczyner Sachs

Adele was born in the shtetl of Jeziorzany in what is now Poland. At the time (1890) it was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire, which made it possible for her family to move to the capital city of Vienna when she was a child. There are three towns in Poland call Jeziorzany, one of them (in Lublin Voivodeship) was only renamed Jeziorzany after WWII, so that was not the town where she was born. The other two are one in Masovian Voivodeship and the other in Lesser Poland Voivodeship. It is believed that this last one, a few miles southwest of Krakow is the one where Adele was born.

Adele's brother David was a friend of Harry and Numa Torczyner. They often played chess together, sometimes by mail. Later her younger brother Juli also played chess with the Torczyners. Through those relationships, Adele met Harry and Numa's younger brother Joseph. They dated and eventually married in 1917. Her younger brother Juli remembers her having a difficult childbirth with daughter Esther. After the birth of Esther, Joseph became ill and died in 1919. She worked at the Delka Shoe Company.

She remarried, to Bernhard Sachs. Their son Kurt was born in 1924. When Adele's brother Juli left Austria, he wanted Adele and her husband Bernhard to also leave, but Bernhard did not then feel he could due to other family obligations. Later attempts to leave were unsuccessful.

She was deported by the Nazis with her husband to the Lodz concentration camp and then murdered at Chelmno extermination camp. She and Bernhard were sent to Chelmno, about 60 kilometers northwest of Lodz. Most people transported there were killed in gas vans the day following arrival. Though there were no records at Chelmno, it appears that their date of death was May 14, 1942.
