About Joseph Torczyner
Joseph was a journalist and actor.
Joseph's brothers Harry (later Naftali Herz Tur-Sinai) and Numa were friends with David Rosenbaum and often played chess together. In at least one chess playing visit, younger brother Joseph came along and met David's younger sister Adele. David was worried that the more established Torczyner family would not think it appropriate for Adele to see Joseph, so David sought to forbid Adele from talking to any of them. Later, according to Esther Torczyner Lerner, Adele secretly dated Joseph and finally, in 1917, they married. Harry Torczyner (Tur-Sinai) always remembered David's younger brother Julius as well.
Joseph worked as a journalist and also as an actor. When his daughter Esther Lerner was young she would look in his scrapbook with the reviews of the plays he had been in. In one, he acted with the just starting out Marlene Dietrich, and the reviewer said, "Watch out, world, you will hear a lot more from this young actress".
Joseph died two weeks before his 31st birthday in a tuberculosis sanitarium after the 1919 influenza epidemic. It was Passover, and when the not very observant Joseph heard that there was not going to be a Seder, he decided to conduct one single-handed. He had a hemorrhage from the lungs the next day and died.
Buried in Vienna at the ZENTRALFRIEDHOF central cemetery, in section 1, Group 49a Row 11, Grave 38a.
