About Adele Newman
Adele was born in New York in 1916, the fifth of six children. The family moved to New Orleans LA in the late 1920's. Adele's father Gus was a barber, though he remained unemployed for most of his adult life. Her Mother, Rose Fuchs, supported the family by taking in boarders, and running a beach chair concession at Lake Ponchartrain. Adele went to the Newman School and Sophie Newcomb college. She met Irving Newman in 1936-7--he was a medical student at LSU at the time. They were married in Santa Ana California in an orange grove (she was barefoot because she couldnt walk in her high heels in the grove). They were secretly married because Irvings mother did not want him to marry. She worked as executive secretary to the owner of Western Theater Supply in LA. Irving went overseas in WWII when Adele was pregnant with Randy. After Randy was born, she moved back to New Orleans to be with her family until Irving's return. Alan was born in 1947. The following years were difficult for Adele, she began having crippling migraine headaches, and had a very difficult pregnancy ending in the loss of a baby daughter during a life threatening complicated delivery. Her health continued to be a problem until the mid-fifties when her migraines disappeared suddenly.
Adele was beautiful, fun-loving and good natured. She was a loyal and trusting friend. Because of her southern accent, beauty, and disingenuousness, and the overwhelming nature of Irving's personality, she was unfairly marginalized and underappreciated in the family. She was, in actuality, perceptive and wise, and not the sterotypic "Southern Belle" she was made out to be.
