The Duchy of Modena & Reggio were overthrown in 1859 and fell in the 2nd War of Independence and was eventually annexed in the unification of the Kingdom of Italy; Adelgunde and Franz V were forced to flee to Vienna in exile. Their only child died at less than a year old. Franz V died 20 November 1875. Adelgunde never remarried and died at 91 years old.
