About Adelma Lupton

Note: The following biography is a collection of several excerpts taken from the" Memoirs of Jay County." The section on Adelma is quite lengthy. In trying to find a suitable picture for Adelma, I consider several possibilities and decided to use the same picture placed on his father's profile. This is where he started and by hard work and the sweat of his brow was able to amass a fourtune.:

We can best convey an idea of the relation which Mr Lupton bore to the public by quoting from the Daily Commercial of Portland In the passing of Adehna Lupton: Jay county loses a good citizen and one who will be especially missed in his home town of Camden. Of of rugged firm character he pursued his vocation with indomitable purpose knowing no such thing as failure or disappointment. From the forge where he wielded the hammer over the blood red iron for many years and sent the sparks flying by his strong blows, from that to banking, a pursuit in which he was eminently successfu.l He was keen and observing, drove good bargains and knew how to make the most of what he possessed.

He was public spirited and when he favored an enterprise he was indefatigable in his efforts in its behalf. The close of his life saw him intimately connected with three sound and flourishing financial institutions in addition to amassing a large private fortune, Mr Lupton was one of the few really successful financiers of his day. He knew no failure yet withal he was strictly honest and was ever willing to aid an honest effort upon the part of the struggling poor, but had no use for a dishonest person in any place on his large list of employes, His sound discretion and cool calm judgment rendered him a valued counsellor on all questions of finance or business investment.

Personally, Mr Lupton was a gentleman of great mental power. He loved the society of friends and greatly enjoyed to hear reminiscences of early days but he was never a member of a secret society or a religious denomination. The funeral of Mr Lupton was the largest ever held in Pennville.

Adelma Lupton came to Pennville in 1838 with his father, made his fortune working first as a blacksmith, then as a manufacturer of plows, wagons, and buggies, and finally in the general trading and livestock business.

In 1890 he started the Pennville Bank with $50,000 (over 1.1 million 2008 dollars) which he personally set aside The private bank, which survived the panic of 1893, built a reputation as being a sound financial institution to the point that several oil operators of the time kept their money there, even though it was not under state supervision. Lupton died on June 9, 1899 and his son A. G. Lupton was named president.
