A MAORI WAR VETERAN. A Tauranga correspondent sends me the translation of an article from a Swedish journal containing particulars of the career of Admiral Klintberg, whom many veterans of New Zealand will remember as having been an active participant in the Maori War of 1863-1864. The article says:—"In 1862 Mr. Klintberg was appointed adjutant to the Marine Depot Chef in Gothenburg. The sea, however, and a desire for a more active life enticed young Klintberg, and when the unrest amongst the natives in New Zealand culminated in war, causing an English naval expedition to be sent to these waters, he sought and obtained service as an English naval officer on board H.M.S. Curacao, belonging to the division of the fleet which, during this campaign was under command of Commodore Sir William Wideman. He took part in the fights at Rangiriri on December, 1863, and Rangiawhia on February, 1864, as well as during the bloody encounter at Pukehinahina on April 29 of the same year, when a combined force from the Naval Brigade and the 43rd Regiment under command of Commodore Edward Hay stormed and captured the native stronghold. In these lights the young Swede distinguished himself so much that the British Government awarded him a gold medal for bravery. On returning home he re-entered the Swedish naval service, and was in 1893 appointed contra-admiral. In the year 1900 he was made a vice-admiral, and vacated his post as chief of the naval staff in 1903, when the age regulation compelled him to retire to the reserve with the full rank of admiral. He is at present the only officer in the Swedish navy holding that rank." Source: New Zealand Herald (22 March 1911, p. 10).
