Biographical Summary

"Sir John Charles Dalrymple-Hay, Baronet [1798], of Park place and Dunragit aforesaid, 1st s. and h,, being only child by 1st wife, b. 11 Feb. 1821, in Princes street, Edinburgh; ed. at Rugby, 1833 ; entered the Royal Navy, 1834, served off the Cape during the first Caffre war ; served in the Syrian war, being at the bombardment of Beyrout and Acre, 1839-42, and distinguishing himself in the boat attack on Tortosa, 20 Sep. 1840 ; was in command off the coast of China, Sep. and Oct. 1849, at the destruction of two piratical fleets ; was in command in the Black Sea during the Crimean war, 1855-56, being present at the fall of Sebastopol (Syrian medal. Acre medal. War medal and Sebastopol clasp ; 4th class of the Turkish order of the Medjidie) ; was in command in North America and the West Indies, 1857-60, becoming Rear-Admiral, 1866 (retired 1870); Vice-Admiral, 1872, and finally, 1878, Admiral, having suc. to the Baronetcy, 19 March 1861. He was M.P. for Wakefield, 1862-65 ; for Stamford, May 1866 to 1880, and for Wigton burghs, 1880-85. He was a Public Works Loan Commissioner, 1862-74, being made P.C. 2 March 1874- was a Lord of the Admiralty, 1866-69; O.B., 1869; K.C B., 1885- G.C.B 1902. He was also cr. D.C.L. (Oxford), 22 June 1870; Vice-President of the Institute of Naval Architects; P.R.S., P.R.G.S., etc. He m, 17 Aug. 1847, at Ettrick church, CO. Selkirk, Eliza, 3d. da. of William John (Napier), 9th Lord Napier of Merchistoun [S.], by Eliza, da. of the Hon. Andrew James Cochrane Johnstone. She, who was b. 26 Sep. 1822, d. 2 April 1901, at 108 St George's square, Pimlico, aged 78."
