Admiral Sir George Greville Wellesley GCB (2 August 1814 – 6 April 1901) was a senior naval officer and First Naval Lord. He was a nephew of the Duke of Wellington.
Naval career
Wellesley joined the Royal Navy in 1828.[2] Between 1849 and 1856 he commanded successively HMS Daedalus and HMS Cornwallis, the latter command being during the Crimean War.
He was Commander of the Indian Navy from 1857 to 1862 and Commander-in-Chief, North America and West Indies Station from 1869 to 1870. He went on to be Commander-in-Chief of the Channel Squadron from 1870 to 1871 but was relieved of that post after a ship under his command ran aground off Gibraltar. He was made Commander-in-Chief North America and West Indies again from 1873 to 1875. He was appointed First Naval Lord in 1877 and retired in 1879.
He died in London.
Family
In 1853 he married Elizabeth Doughty; they had one daughter, Olivia Georgiana.
