Notes for John Jay Kellogg: First settled Kellogg, Oregon in 1849. Became the first postmaster in 1856. had the first gristmill in the Umpqua Valley. There are two books about the Kellogg family (John Jay and his two sons Lyman & Adna Barnes (Barney) who were the first settlers in Kellogg, Douglas Co, Oregon. They first called their home "Pleasant Plains" in Feb 1856 the first U S Post office was opened and then they officially called it "Kellogg". John Jay was the first post master and at his death Lyman became postmaster for about 13 years. John Jay and Jane were Married in Watertown, New York in 1823 and settled in Oregon in 1849. All seven of their children were born "before their parents crossed the plains" according to one book. There are two book with information about the Kellogg's in Oregon (1) The Saga of the Kellogg Cresent by Leona Spayde Madison and Umpqua Valley Oregon and its Pioneer's by Harold Minter. John Jay Kellogg was a wagon-maker in Oswego, New York. He move to Elkhart, Indiana then to Union Grove Township., Whitside Co, Illinois, and then to the Oregon Territory.
