About Adolf Fredrik Nicolaisen Bodin
Resande
Slidre-Fredrik
As a child Adolf Fredrik was registered in the counting of the groups of travellers. His mother died when he was ten, and he kept travelling by himself until he came to Kristiania around the age of 13-14 where he made a living sweeping for a couple of years. In the fall of 1858 his father brought him and his sister, Anne Marie, to the priest Hauge (located in Skien) and sought his help. Thus, in 1859 he and his sister was relocated by the state. He ended up in a foster home, whereas she was sent to an educational institution.
Adolf Fredrik Nikolaisen Bodin and his wife Anne Marie were some among the many who decided to settle in Kristiania in the late 1800's. Among other travellers he was nicknamed "Slidre-Fredrik" (meaning "Scabbard-Fredrik" as he was talented when it came to making scabbards. As a brazier he would make various items out of brass, and as a tinsmith he met a high demand of a variety of household items and gutters.
The family stayed in town for years in different tenements, all the while travelling around. In 1904 it says in "Fattigforstanderen"s (the poor trustee) diary that the family had lived in Opplandsgaten the past three months after living in Totengata before that.
