He died March 11, 1969, in Elk City, Oklahoma. In 1902 Dolphie married Laura Webb, and to this union were born six children. Their children were:

The family lived in Van Lear, Johnson County, KY through part of the 1920s, until they moved to Oklahoma. On the 1930 census, the Phelps were in Elk City, Beckham County, OK, where Laura and Dolphie stayed for the remainder of their lives.

Adolphus was predeceased by his parents, his wife Laura, and his oldest child Heber, who died of cirrhosis at the age of 45. He was survived by his five remaining children, nine grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.
