About Adrian von Bubenberg, I

BIOGRAPHY Adrian von Bubenberg was born about 1431 in Spiez, Switzerland, son of Heinrich von Bubenberg, Herr von Spiez and mayor (Schultheiss) of Bern and Anneli von Rosenegg. In 1454 Adrian married Jacoba von Arberg who died after 12 August 1455, leaving one daughter. On 24 April 1457 Adrien married Jeanne de la Sarra, who died about 1480-82.

In 1466 he was knighted during a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Adrian, a general, was mayor of Bern in the years 1468-69, 1473-74 and 1477-79. In April 1476 he was appointed commander of Mürten. His forces resisted a twelve-day siege by the troops of Charles 'the Rash', duke of Burgundy, until he was relieved by Swiss forces, and on 22 June he was victorious over Charles, defeating him decisively.

Over a long period he led Bernese negotiations with other cantons of the old Swiss Confederacy and foreign powers, including Savoy, Burgundy, France and the Holy Roman Empire.

Adrian von Bubenberg died in August 1479 in Bern and was buried in the choir of the Berner Münster, the Cathedral of Bern. As he had always been short of funds, Adrian von Bubenberg was posthumously banned by the Church for his debts in 1481, but the government resisted Pope Sixtus IV's demands that he be exhumed and dishonourably buried because of this.

In 1897 Bern honoured the man who was instrumental in saving Switzerland from defeat with a bronze statue on the Bubenberg Square in the centre of the city
