About Adrienne Clarke
About Adrienne Clarke, Eleanor Farjeon says in the foreword to The Unlocked Book that Adrienne never married and that she was "a darker figure, rather eccentric." pg. 18 Asia herself wrote in the Unlocked Book that Adrienne was named "after her uncle, Joseph Adrien Booth, who had received the name of Adrien on account of J. B. Booth junior acting Adrien de Mauprat so well." pg. 113 Adrien de Mauprat is a character in Edward George Bulwer-Lytton's play Richelieu. Edwin Booth was famous for his role as Richelieu in this play. On July 14, 1920, Adrienne applied for a U.S. passport. The application confirms the spelling of her name, her birth date, her birthplace, and indicates she was not married at the time of the application. The application indicates that between 1908-1913 she lived in Hove, Sussex, England, which is very near Brighton where her mother died. Between 1913-1920 she lived at Camberley, Surrey, England, not far from London. Adrienne is described as 57 years old; 5 feet 1 inch tall; forehead, mouth, complexion described as "medium. Eyes brown (wears glasses); hair brown turning grey. Face: oval. Figure: slender. The application includes a photo of Adrienne. Unfortunately, the electronic version of the photo is extremely poor. Her attorney, Peter Zucker with an office at 192 Broadway NYC (home 1 West 70th St. NYC) served as her identifying witness. She had obtained another passport #4659 on May 25, 1920, in London that was apparently canceled when she applied for a new passport in NYC. She planned to sail via the Aquitania on August 28, 1920, for England where she planned to take up temporary residence and to return to the US within two years. The application indicates she had "no occupation."
