Afton Bird— Mendon, Afton Bird, 66, died at a Logan hospital Monday of a heart ailment. He was born June 6, 1901 in Mendon, the son of Mormon and Emerine Bird. He married Pearl Hill December 18, 1923 in the Logan LDS Temple. She is presently the postmistress for Mendon. He spent his life as a resident of Mendon where he was a farmer and had been employed by the Utah-Idaho Central and Union Pacific Railroads. He retired in 1965 and the following year was caretaker for the Mendon Cemetery. He was an active member of the LDS Church as a High Priest in the Logan Stake and a worker in the Mendon Ward. He is well known throughout the valley for his athletic ability and love of sports. Surviving are his wife, Mendon, sons and daughters, Mrs. Harold (Darlene) Richins, Henefer, Utah; Dale Bird, Roy; Mrs. Dee (Renee) Crockett, Smithfield; Mrs. Daniel (Laura Lee) Leatham, Mrs. Travis (Linda) Johnson, both of Logan; Mrs. Lee (Deon Carroll), J. Karl Bird, both of Salt Lake City; 23 grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Clarence Bird, Mendon; Earl Bird, Cyril Bird, both of Brigham City; Mrs. Hazel Heath, Salt Lake City; Mrs. Omar (Erma) Brewington, Downey, California; Mrs. Truman (Lucile) Hillyard, Logan. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 1:00 p.m. in the Mendon chapel with Bishop Zeno Andersen officiating. Friends may call at Hall Mortuary in Logan Wednesday evening from 7–9 and at the Relief Society Room in the Mendon Church House Thursday from 11:30 a.m. until time of rites.
