Afton Welker Mayes of Wilder, Idaho, died peacefully at West Valley Medical Center on Monday, February 11, 2008. Afton was born in Georgetown, Bear Lake County, Idaho, on November 29, 1918, to Albert Wesley Welker and Ethel Bacon Welker. When Afton was 14 years old the family moved from Georgetown to Meridian, Idaho, where Afton received the balance of her elementary education. On May 25, 1939, she married Carl Devere Mayes, a fellow graduate of Meridian High School. After World War II they moved to Pocatello, Idaho where Carl received his Pharmaceutical Degree. For many years Afton and Carl operated Carl's Drugstore in Wilder, Idaho.
Carl preceded Afton in death on March 14, 1996. They are survived by three children. She leaves one living sister and a brother. Afton has been an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Church. Funeral arrangements are pending with Dakan Mortuary. A graveside service will be held at the Roswell Cemetery on Friday, February 15 at 11 a.m. and will be under the direction of Bishop Rod Nielsen of Parma.
