About Afton McKinney

A 76-year-old Prineville woman died in a car crash Friday morning on the Powell Butte Highway about three miles south of the U.S. Highway 126 junction.

At around 6 a.m., Crook County officers received a call from Prineville resident Debra Lynn Ivie, 56, reporting a crash. Ivie had been headed south in her 2005 Hyundai when she failed to negotiate a left curve and lost control of the car. The vehicle traveled off road until it hit several trees. Ivie was traveling with her mother, Afton Slaughter, 76.

Crook County 911 dispatchers used phone mapping software to pinpoint the vehicle’s location, and emergency responders were able to find the car 15 minutes after the call. Ivie was taken to St. Charles Redmond with non-life-threatening injuries. Slaughter was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both Ivie and Slaughter were using seat belts, and the car’s airbags deployed at the time of the accident.
