Agen Nilsen was born in Vilhelmina Sweden. Between 1831 and 1839 the family moved to Hattfjelldal, Norway.

Agen's birth name was Agapetus Nilssen Unkervaten, b. 16 Aug 1831 according to Swedish records in Norr Latikberg in Vilhelmina, Sweden. He married MAREN JOHANNE UNKERVATEN [IVARSDTR] She was born on 16 May 1835, in Ravatnet, Vefsn, to Ivar Ivarsson and Karin Jonsdtr, She was christened on 19 July 1835, in Vefsn.

Maren died on 16 August 1882, age 47, in Skarmodalen, Hattfjelldal. She was buried on 19 August 1882.

The couple had 11 children.

On 13 July 1892, age 60 and a widower, Agapetus emigrated from Trondheim, Norway to the United States. He left his farm (Heggli) to his daughter Bergitte and son-in-law Ole in 1887. He had 3 children living in the Cumberland, Wisconsin area, a son and two daughters.

Agapetus died on 6 August 1893, age 61, in Barron, Barron County, Wisconsin. Agapetus was buried in Section 10 Church Cemetery, Barron County, WI.

In USA he used the name: Agen Nilsen.
