Daughter of Hon. Thomas Lewis (1718 – 1790) and Jane Strother Lewis (1731 – 1820). First married Captain John Frogg, III (1745 – 1774). Parents of: Elizabeth Strother Frogg (1771 – 1841) and Charles Augustus (Frogg) Stuart (1775 – ?). Captain Frogg was killed at the Battle of Point Pleasant. She then married Colonel John Stuart (1749 – 1823) on 18 Nov 1778. He adopted Charles Augustus (Frogg) Stuart (1775 – ?). SUMMARY

John Frogg III was born on May 26, 1745 to John Frogg II and Elizabeth Strother in Prince William County, Virginia. John took up the trade of carpenter and saddler and married his cousin, Agatha Lewis, daughter of Thomas Lewis and Jane Strother. Jane Strother's sister, Elizabeth married John Frogg Senior. A third sister, Agatha Strother married John Madison, uncle to the future President, James Madison.

In 1773, John and Agatha Frogg moved to the Town of Staunton in Augusta County, Virginia. In late 1774 John Frogg enlisted as a sutler to the Virginia Militia against cornstalk and was killed at the Battle of Point Pleasant leaving one daughter, Elizabeth Frogg. and one son, Charles A. Stewart

TIMELINE

On Oct.18,1770, John Frogg, a saddler and carpenter married his young cousin, Agatha Lewis (1753-1836) in Augusta County, VA. Agatha Lewis was the daughter of Col. Thomas Lewis of Donegal County, Ireland, and Jane (Strother) Lewis of Virginia. Jane Strother's sister, Elizabeth married John's father.

Agatha's father, Thomas Lewis was born in 1746. He was appointed colonial surveyor of Augusta, and much of George Washington's great wealth was acquired by surveys of land under his authority and in common with him. He represented the county in the House of Burgesses almost uninterruptedly from 1745 to 1767, and voted in 1765 for Patrick Henry's celebrated resolutions declaring that

"this general assembly have the only exclusive right and power to lay taxes and impositions upon the inhabitants of this colony; that any efforts in an opposite direction are illegal, unconstitutional and unjust, and have a manifest tendency to destroy British as well as American freedom." In 1775 he was unanimously elected delegate to the Colonial Congress, and was one of the first to enroll his name among the "Sons of Liberty."

John Frogg's father-in-law was commissioner of the old confederacy of the thirteen colonies in 1778, to treat with the Indian tribes at the battle of Point Pleasant. He was a member of the convention which ratified the constitution of the United States. After the Revolution, Gen. Washington made him a visit at Lewiston, in Rockingham, and there arranged their land claims. He had a literary taste, and when not engaged in business was generally to be found in his library. He died at his residence in Rockingham County, on the Shenandoah River, three miles from Port Republic, January 31, 1790. In his will he fixed the place on his own estate where he wished to be buried, and desired that the burial service might be read from the Book of Common Prayer by his friend Peachy Gilmer. Married (January 26, 1749) Jane, the daughter of William Strother, Esq., of Stafford Co., Va., whose estate, opposite to Fredericksburg, joined the residence of the father of Gen. Washington, with whom (Gen. W.) she was a schoolmate and nearly of the same age [2].

November 20, 1770 (age 25) shortly after the marriage in Augusta County, John and Agatha purchase land in the Town of Staunton and 120 acres in the Manor of Beverley.
