A PERSONAL RECOLLECTION

Thia Koula and Uncle George Paxinos owned a double-story fruit-shop at 550

Rathdown Street, Carlton with a spacious dwelling behind. It was a centre of Ithacan

fellowship. As young as I was, I remembered the gatherings of the Paxinos clan. The

backyard where delicious nectarines were eaten directly from the tree, the spitting

out the seeds of the luscious watermelon slices proferred to us on platters. From the

house, the melodic singing of the Pareoi, the wafting aromas of Greek food and the

chatter of the Ithacan vernacular. The shop, with its lovely smells of fresh fruit and vegetables, the kitchen, where every morning Uncle George would ask what I wanted for

breakfast to get the same answer: “Bread, butter and honey.” And the sound of the

classical music emanating from the ABC band on the radio, Thia Koula always had it

on the same station.

I remember Thia Koula with great affection. She was a very important part of my early

childhood. I was only seven years old when my mother died very suddenly and during

this turbulent, sad time in our family I was handed over to Thia Koula to look after

for several weeks. I can never forget with what tenderness and empathy she tended

a bewildered child who didn’t understand what was going on. I have always had a

great regard for Thia Koula, Uncle George and their daughter Aspasia. They took in

a lonely, confused little girl and gave her a sense of security and stability and great

memories to take into adulthood.

The news of your passing has severed another meaningful link with the past. Our

thoughts are with your daughter Aspasia, your many grand-children and greatgrand-

children. Rest in peace, Thia Koula.

Απεβίωσε στην Αθήνα στις 2 Ιουνίου 2008 η σεβαστή κυρία Κούλα Παξινού από τη

Λεύκη Ιθάκης σε προχωρημένη ηλικία. Πολλοί Ιθακήσιοι της Μελβούρνης θυμούνται την αείμνηστη Κούλα με συμπάθεια και αγάπη από την μακροχρόνια διαμονή της πριν επιστρέψει οριστικά στην Ελλάδα μαζί με τον σύζυγο της Γεώργιο.

Στην κόρη της Αναστασία, εγγόνια Δανάη, Λίλα. Γιώργο και οικογενειές τους,

θερμά συλλυπητήρια.

Ας είναι ελαφρύ το χώμα που σε σκεπάζει.
