About Agnes Lowther
GEDCOM Note
In 1841 Agnes, aged 60, was living at the farming hamlet of Southfield, Whicham, Cumberland and married to the yeoman farmer William Troughton (65). Southfield is essentially a farm with a few associated cottages. William and Agnes were married on 22 February 1803 at Whicham witnessed by John Myers and Christopher Lowther. Also living at the farm were William (30), Richard (25), Christopher (20), Thomas (15), James (3), Elizabeth (25), Agnes (20), Mary (6) and Agnes (1). These were all Troughtons and presumably sons and daughters of William and Agnes though the relationships are unclear, especially of the younger children. It may be that Elizabeth Troughton was the wife of the younger William Troughton and that James, Mary and Agnes were their children. Henry Atkinson (15) and Mary Postlethwaite are listed as a servants. Robert Troughton, who was farmimg at Biggar on Walney Island in 1841 was born at Southfield and, given the isolated nature of the farm and the fact that a Troughton family was in residence in 1841 suggests that William and Agnes were his parents. The only other people living at Southfield were Thomas Davis (65), a cooper, Isabella Atkinson (50?), of independent means, Ruben Atkinson (7?) and Ann Atkinson (2) who were possibly related to Henry Atkinson. Registrations of death for Agnes Troughton are listed at Bootle, Cumberland in 1843 and another in 1845.
