About Agnes Montagu
Biography

Agnes Dudley is the daughter of William Dudley, of Clopton, near Oundle in Northamptonshire in England, and his wife Christian Darrell. Her birth date is unknown but given she married in or before September 1485 (see below) she might have been born in about the mid-1460's.
She married Thomas Montagu, the son of Richard Montagu (formerly Ladde) and his wife Agnes.[1] Thomas was considered an adult in August 1482 [2]and must have been born by 1461 but could have been born earlier than that. Thomas Montagu married her in or before September 1485.
They had the following two sons, but there may have been other children;
- Edward Montagu, born circa 1487[9] at Brigstock Manor;
- John Montagu (often thought to be the elder son[10] but perhaps a younger son[11]). Thomas' second wife, whom he married in or before 1512, was Mary Lane, daughter of William Lane, of Finedon.[12] There seems to be no children from this marriage.
Thomas Montagu was buried in the chancel of the Church of Hemington in a tomb of grey marble, with his first wife Agnes. The inscription is as follows;
Of your charite pray for the soules of Thomas Montagu, gentilman, and Agnes his wyff. Which Thomas decessed the 5 day of September, the yer of our Lord 1517. On whos soules Jesu have mercy.[15]

- Montagu, Sir Edward (1480s–1557), judge, the second son of Thomas Montagu (d. 1517), of Hemington, Northamptonshire, and Agnes, daughter of William Dudley of Clopton, near Oundle, was born in the royal manor house of Brigstock. His father, an attorney representing Northamptonshire clients in the common pleas from the 1470s until at least 1505, had prospered sufficiently to acquire the manors of Hemington and Hanging Houghton. Edward is said to have spent some time at Cambridge before 1506, when he was admitted to the Middle Temple, an inn with a strong Northamptonshire presence perhaps attributable to the benchership of Richard Empson. Little is known of his early career, save that he is mentioned as an attorney in the court of requests from 1519 and was a justice of the peace for his native county from 1523. A tradition that he was speaker of the Commons in 1523 has not been corroborated by any contemporary source, though it is possible that he was a member of parliament that year. __________________
