About Ailcy Young

Ailcy (Duckett) (Owens) Young

Ailcy Duckett was born 8 March 1800 near Clinton, Laurens County, South Carolina. She was the Daughter of Thomas Duckett Jr., also born in Laurens County SC, and Lydia Whitmore/Whitmire of Laurens. She married Thomas Richard Owens 6 Nov 1817. He was born about 1789 in South Carolina, and died 10 Jul 1828, and is buried in Duncan Creek Cemetery. She remarried, to George Young Jr, 30 Oct 1832; he was born 9 Sept 1788 in South Carolina. He died 2 Aug 1843 and is also buried in Duncan Creek Cemetery.

Ailcy was the mother of 7 children with Thomas Owens: Lydia Whitmire Owens, Mary Lou Owens, Paulina Owens, Thomas Owens, Sarah Elizabeth Owens, Richard Duckett Owens, and Martha Ann Owens.

With her second husband George Young Jr., Ailcy had another 5 children: Ailsey Permelia Young, Andrew Curtis Young, Lettis (Letty) Lordusky Young, Joseph Washington Young, and Rachel Helen Young. Ailsey was a double 1st cousin of George Young Jr's first wife Mary Duckett.

After the Civil War, with much of South Carolina in ruins, the twice-widowed Ailcy emigrated to Howard County, Arkansas, with many of her children and other members of her extended family, including Youngs, McCrarys, Glasgows, Owens, Hills and others. Their wagon train also included some of their freed former slaves, including two young orphaned siblings who were raised in Arkansas with the Young and McCrary families. They settled near Center Point, Howard County, AR, where she lived for a while with her son Dr. Richard Duckett Owens, and his family, who had emigrated to Arkansas before the war, and who was one of the area's leading citizens. She was living with her daughter Rachel Helen (Young) McCrary, and her family, when she died.

Several of Ailcy's children are buried alongside her in County Line Cemetery in Nashville, AR, including her son Dr. Richard Duckett Owens, and her daughters Martha Ann (Owens) Hill, and Rachel Helen (Young) McCrary. Ailcy's mother, Lydia Whitmire Reeder, is also buried in this cemetery; hers is one of the oldest headstones in the cemetery.
