Aileen Wuornos

She was the daughter of teenage parents Diane and Leo Pittman. Her father was a convicted child molestor. Her mother abandoned her and she was later adopted by her maternal grandparents. She gave birth to a son in a home for unwed mothers in 1971. Aileen drifted around the country, ending up in Florida. She had a lengthy criminal record which included charges of disorderly conduct, drunk driving, assault, armed robbery, check forgery, auto theft, and prostitution. In 1991 she confessed to killing six men in 1989 and 1990. She claimed they had all raped her while she was working as a prostitute, although shortly before her death she admitted there were no rapes, and robbery was her motive. There was some question as to whether she was legally sane; the Florida Supreme Court eventually ruled she was competent for execution. She herself told the court, "I am one who seriously hates human life and would kill again. There is no point in sparing me. It's a waste of taxpayer's money." Aileen was executed in Florida's Starke Prison. Her last words were, "I'd just like to say I'm sailing with the rock, and I'll be back like Independence Day, with Jesus June 6. Like the movie, big mother ship and all, I'll be back." A childhood friend claimed her body and scattered her cremains under a walnut tree in her back yard, near where she and Aileen grew up. Her life is the subject of the movie "Monster," with Charlize Theron portraying her.

Aileen was born to teenage parents. Her biological father was a convicted child molestor and committed suicide in prison. Her mother was allegedly disowned from the family for eloping with him. Aileene had a hard up-bringing, allegedly been sexually, physically and mentally abused by her adopted father who was actually her maternal grandfather. She turned to a life of prostitution at a prepubescent age and inevitably had the same lifestyle as an adult.

Some of the closest people to her either abandoned her or died by alcohol or suicide. She met a woman named Tyria Moore whom she fell in love with and wanted to support. Aileen "Lee" Wuornos admitted to robbing men at gunpoint and murdering them in order to use the money to support hers and Tyria's lifestyle. Whether Tyria knew or did not know, she was not convicted of any crimes.

To end her own suffering in prison and sentence to death row, Aileen opted to have her execution done early, which was done by lethal injection.

Aileen's ashes were scattered in Fostoria, Michigan, United States. She requested the song "Carnival" by Natalie Merchant be played at her funeral.

Aileen's life story has twice been dramatized on film: The 1992 TV Movie Overkill: The Aileen Wuornos Story starring Jean Smart; and the 2003 motion picture Monster starring Charlize Theron, for which the actress won an Academy Award.
