DAVIS, Alan Charles - 84, passed away peacefully Thursday, February 17, 2011. He was born July 15, 1926 in Plaistow, West Ham, London, England to Adelaide and Charles Davis. As a boy scout, he acted as a messenger for the Air Raid Warden post at Dagenham, Essex in the early part of WWII. Later in the war effort, he served in the British Royal Army Service (RACS) as a corporal/skipper on the Grey Queen. Afterwards, he became a member of the Metropolitan Police, London, England. In 1955, he immigrated to Canada, finding work as an insurance inspector, and moved to Elliot Lake in 1958 to start the Al Davis Insurance Shop. Alan made a valuable contribution to the community, serving in leadership roles for Elliot Lake's Rotary Club, the North Shore Board of Education, Chamber of Commerce, Elliot Lake's Mount Dufour Ski Club and Boy Scouts of Canada. After retiring from his business, he shared his love of skiing as a ski instructor for 13 years at Mt Tremblay, Sunshine Village, Whistler, and Sugar Bowl, Utah. Alan strove to make a difference in the world, volunteering with the Canadian Executive Service Organization as an insurance consultant in Poland, Ukraine, and Russia. An avid nature lover, he took great joy in creating special memories for his family along back roads, at the family camp and later on the family farm in Massey. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Linda Davis, three children Paul (Brenda), Ken (Denise), Peggy, his grandchildren Leena, Cory, Daria, Dreyden, Mia, Martin, his sister Peggy, brother Norman, and niece Marilyn (Glenn) and nephew Richard (Jane). Following his wishes, there will be no memorial service. Donations to the Equipment Fund at St. Joseph's Hospital in Elliot Lake are gratefully accepted. Burial arrangements entrusted to Alternative Funeral Services.
