Alan Cathcart, 3rd Lord Cathcart was the son of Alan Cathcart, Master of Cathcart and Agnes Lyle.[1][2][3] He succeeded to the title of 3rd Lord Cathcart in December 1535.

He married Helen Sempill, daughter of William Sempill, 2nd Lord Sempill and Margaret Montgomerie.[1][2][4] They had issue:

Alan, 4th Lord Cathcart (only son) b. c 1537, d. Dec 1618[1][5]
He also had a natural son also named Alan.[1]

He fought in the Battle of Pinkie on 10 September 1547 where he was killed in action.[1][4][5]
