In the Treaty of Devizes, 1153, the Duke Henry of Normandy and Count of Anjou, granted to Ranulph de Gernon, Earl of Chester and Vicomte of Avranches (son of Lucy Countess of Chester), among many other parcels in Normandy and in England, the lands formerly belonging to Alan of Lincoln, saying:
"And I have given unto him the Fief of Alan de Lincoln, who was Uncle of his (the Earl's) mother,"
