About Albert G. Gholson

Albert G. Gholson, soldier in the Texas Revolution, the son of Samuel and Mary Ann (Slaten) Gholson, was born in Bedford County, Kentucky, on May 25, 1818. After moving to Robertson's colony in Texas, he joined the Texas army in 1835 and served successively under Capt. Carey White and Capt. Thomas Hudson Barron. Gholson participated in the battles of Gonzales and Concepción, and the siege of Bexar. He is said to have participated in the battle of San Jacinto as well, but his name does not appear on the muster rolls of the companies involved. In 1837 Gholson served as first lieutenant in Capt. Tom Barron's ranging company. Two years later he participated in an Indian battle near Morgans Point in Falls County. Gholson lived in Harrison County, at Blue Ridge in Limestone County, in Falls County, in Gholson's Valley in McLennan County, in Mills County, and in the lower part of Coryell County, where he farmed and raised stock. He married Elidia Anderson in December 1838, and they had two children. He married Mary Mathis in 1846, and they had four children. He died on June 10, 1860, as the result of a fight with his neighbor William Dokes.
