COUNTY HISTORY: TN; Hancock Co.; HANCOCK CO., TN, AND ITS PEOPLE 1844-1989; Hancock Co. Historical Society; 1989; p. 119-120

"Abner Hatfield is believed to have been the son of one George (Gof) Hatfield and his wife whose identity is not certain at this time. Abner Hatfield was born 1781 in the southwestern area of Virginia. He is found on many of the tax lists of Lee County, VA, during the years of 1808-1815. In 1809 George Gof Hatfield sold to Abner Hatfield 100 acres on Lick Branch of Lee County, VA (DBk2:255). In 1815 Abner appears as an out-of-state resident who still owns land in Lee County, VA. This perhaps gives us the approximate time Abner and his family moved to then Claiborne County, TN. Lee County (VA) DBk3:393 gives another clue when Abner Hatfield, of the County of Claiborne, State of Tennessee, sells 115 acres lying on Lick Branch, in Lee County, VA to Philip Nance of Lee County, VA on 11/24/1818. In 1825 Abner Hatfield received a land grant from the State of Tennessee. This transaction and others occurred as Abner acquired land in Claiborne County. In 1845 Abner deeded "all my landed possessions "to his son"...for love and affection afforded him by his son Adam Hatfield..."

Abner Hatfield was a participant in the War of 1812 according to a letter written 3/24/1924 by his granddaughter, Mary Hatfield Ramsey, to her niece Myrtle Parkey Anderson. Quote: "Our Grandfather Hatfield his name was Abner he was a soldier in the War of 182 he had told me about being at Norfolk, Va." This information has been confirmed by military records and a bounty land warrant claim received from the National Archives in Washington, D.C.

The written document authorizing the laying off of Claiborne County into voting districts and passed by the Claiborne County Commissioners on 1/28/1836 contains mention of the home of Abner Hatfield as the voting place for District No. 6, better known as the Mulberry Gap District (later a part of Hancook County, TN).

Death records of some of the children refer to the fact that Abner Hatfield married (c.1801) Mary "Polly" Yeary (c. 1786 - c. 1830 - 40), believed to be a daughter of Martha Ball and Henry Yeary, Jr. Henry Yeary, Jr. was the son of Elizabeth Croxdale/Croxstall and Henry Yeary, Sr. Tradition indicates that one Henry Yeary was in the battle of King's Mountain, an important turning point for the Revolutionary War.
