About Albert Samuel Leon
Albert Samuel Leon was born in Glasgow. His father Horatio died in 1924 and his mother Jane Taylor, died in 1925. He and a brother were placed with a farmer who treated them with cruelty, leading to Albert running away aged 15 years. He lied about his age in order to join the Gordon Highlanders, deserting later to fight in the Spanish Civil War. He was arrested upon his return for going AWOL and sent to Fort William, Scotland where he later volunteered for the British Expeditionary Force. He was sent to France around 1939 to assist the retreat and evacuation of forces in Dunkirk.
He settled in Birmingham and married Marjorie Ellen Sadler, they had 11 children, he died in 1962 aged 47 years.
