First (or second?) spouse was Ellen Oliver, who died in September, 1875. It's possible that he was married to someone before Ellen, though, because his daughter's death certificate names Eliza Merrill as her mother (it's possible Ellen and Eliza were the same person), and he was married in 1860, according to the letters:

  • ****************************************************** Census data for 1860-1880:

1860 census (1 Jun 1860): Name: Albert Merill (note spelling) Age in 1860: 24 Birthplace: Michigan (This is a mistake, if it's our Albert) Home in 1860: Fremont, Alpena, Michigan Gender: Male Head of Household: Hylliard Broadwell Post Office: Alpena Occupation: Sawyer in Mill (looks like in lumber mill)

The 1859 letter gives some indication that Albert was in Fremont, so this might be him...This census doesn't indicate whether he's married or not. I don't see anyone who might be his wife. Yet the 1859 family letter says that he's married...See letter below (excerpted from other letters listed below):

A letter dated Nov 4, 185? from unnamed source addressed to Dear Sister, from Castleton Cramache CW states "thought would see Forest in fall", thanks for likeness of Charley, "Anna if you want to come to Colborne", "You wished to know where Albert was he is at Saginaw he is married." So check the Saginaw 1860 census as well. It may be that he lived in both places.

...I have a letter dated 2/4/1859 from Samuel & Phebe Merrell (parents of Forest and Albert Forest) to Son and Daughter saying "happy to hear from Forest", did not know where he was, glad to learn have a daughter-in-law, letter enclosed for Forest to direct to Albert Merrell.

I'm fairly certain that the date on the above was Nov. 4, 1859, since Forest and Anna are married and Charley was born. Albert married fairly quickly if he was unmarried in January, and married by November. He was about 23 years old.--nms...

  • ******************************************************** From Complete History of Alpena County, 1876:

At the beginning, lots of info about DD Oliver, possible relative of Albert's first wife, Ellen Oliver.

  • Mr. E.K. Potter's business was to scale and mark the logs at the landing, and he thus had the honor of scaling the first log, as well as that of measuring the first cargo of lumber that left Alpena, which was in the latter part of the summer of 1859. The honor of cutting the first log belongs to Mr. Sam'l Boggs, while that of drawing it is claimed by three different parties, William Stevens, Albert Merrill, and W. Steples. Henry Doyle had a hand in sawing the first log. - The schooner Meridian, Captain Flood, carried the first cargo of lumber from Alpena.
  • The Fremont fever being over, the people of Alpena wisely determined to change the name of the place from Fremont to Alpena. This was accomplished by the following act of Legislature: AN ACT to change the name of the village of Fremont in the County of Alpena. SECTION 1. The People of the State of Michigan enact, That the name of village of Fremont, in the county of Alpena, State of Michigan, be and the same is hereby changed to Alpena. SEC. 2. This act shall take effect immediately. Approved February 29th, 1859.
  • The ALPENA WEEKLY ARGUS of May 31, 1876, thus speaks of the contrast between the state of affairs eighteen years ago and at present:

What a difference between between our mail carrying facilities now and eighteen years ago. In 1858 it was all chance as to the receiving of mail, and in the winter season it was conveyed by Indians with dogs, while in summer it was received occasionally - just as some of the citizens visited Bay City - and was brought up by sail-boats. But what a change? Now we are supplied with a daily mail both summer and winter, - in winter by stage, and during the summer season by a line of steamers which ply between Alpena and Bay City. The population of the county was but a few souls, and could be called, by naming each individual, in the space of five minutes, yet now the inhabitants of the city and county will reach about eight thousand, and we may say that all have profited by their settlement in this locality. (Albert and Mary were postmaster and postmistress)

  • At the spring election of 1866 one hundred and nineteen votes were cast, and during the same year three shingle mills were erected, one of which, built by Thompson & Co., near Campbell & Potters saw mill, has an estimated capacity of 10,000,000 shingles per year. - At the fall election in November, 220 votes were cast. (could this Thompson be related to Mary?)
  • J.W. Creighton, manufacturer and dealer of boots and shoes, Fine Custom Work a Specialty, Second Street, Alpena (from business directory at below url--could this be family of Grandpa Merrill's first wife, Lillian Creighton/Craighead?) http://www.geocities.com/heartland/acres/1947/completehistoryofalpe...
    • ******************************************************* Mary Thompson was his second or third spouse. They married April 6, 1876. Albert died of tuberculosis abt. March 11, 1880 in Alpena, Alpena Co., MI.

Long Rapids & Vicinity, compiled by Ruth Ann Cochrane. Lachine, MI 1987

p. 4 By 1871 Albert Merrill had owned a sawmill near the present village. The settlement around his mill was known as Merrillsville. In 1873 when the founders were looking for a name for the township and post office, they could not call it Merrillsville because there already was a Merrillsville in St. Clair County, Michigan.

p. 7 Early settlers who settled near the present Village of Long Rapids, also known as the burning, were…Albert Merrill...

p. 9

John Farnell came to Long Rapids during the early 1870’s. When he first arrived in Long Rapids, he hired to press hay for Albert Merrill at $26.00 a month. They used a hand press and by working hard could press four tons of hay daily. Later he worked in the woods and purchased his own farm.

p. 10 John Butler came to Alpena from Huron County, Ontario, Canada in November of 1869. He worked for Churchill and Harrington, Minor Lumber Company, the Boom Company, Albert Pack, Holmes and Wright, Gaffney and Rayburn. He worked in sawmills and on river drives. He moved to Long Rapids in the late 1879’s and later purchased Albert Merrill’s farm by Sauls and Gohl Roads. He was a very successful farmer and an ardent worker in fraternal orders and political affairs.

p. 30 Many shingle mills were in operation during the Lumbering Era in the area. Among the ones owning and operating mills were Albert Merrill.

In December 1887, the Public Schools of Long Rapids Township purchased land on the corner of Long Rapids and Gohl Roads for the purpose of building the Merrill (Beatty) School. The school was named for Albert Merrill who owned and operated a sawmill in the area during the 1870’s. (cont. on page 60) At one time Mr. Merrill owned the property which was later sold to the township for school purposes. Teachers who taught at the Merrill School include Ethel Burdette Wright, Margaret Mulvena, Eva Den and Maggie Lou Small.

p. 75 Others owning and operating stores in the vicinity in 1883 were Alonzo McBride and Mary Merrill. The stores supplied the items needed by the lumbermen and farmers.

p. 78 Others owning stores in the vicinity during the late 1800’s were Mrs. M. LeRoy (formerly Mrs. Albert Merrill, later married to Martin LeRoy), and G.W. Brown. Mrs. LeRoy ran a small dry good store.

We recently obtained a 56 CD set of the 1880 census and we checked it for Albert [even though he shouldn't be listed if the Mar 11 1880 death date is correct]. We found him in Long Rapids and have pasted the record below. You probably already have this data, but thought we'd send it just in case you didn't.
