Albert married Fanny Amelia James on 14 May 1896, and they had 5 children. She decided she wanted her freedom to go out and enjoy herself and saw other men, leaving Albert to look after the children and work at the same time. After all the wrangling about rights and responsibilities, they divorced in 1908, leaving Albert with the children. His mother looked after them while he was at work but she already had a houseful of children of her own, and it got too much for her to handle. All the boys were adopted out and the girl lived with her grandmother. Harold was adopted by Alfred and Annie Oliver, he was an only child Louis was adopted by Jane and Henry Jakes and he had 3 sisters William was adopted by Thomas and Emma Curran, They also adopted 3 other boys to help on the farm in Wairongamai, west of Te Aroha. Fredrick was adoped by a family called Rowe from Napier They were all adopted on the 28 July 1903
Albert went on to marry Margaret McBeth in 1911. She was a primary school teacher. They had a farm in Papamoa, near Tauranga in 1928
Albert married Hilda Mary Garland in 1943. They owned land at Point Wells and later they subdivided it up into sections and also donated a site for a hall and playing fields.
They are buried in Warkworth cemetary. they have no gravestones because they never had any contact with the children after they were adopted out. they are in plot 155A & B, 5th grave from the back boundary and 4th row in from the right. The grave sites are marked with a big unpainted cross with GRANDAD on it in large lettering.
