Alice by Linda Hollowell Bock Posted 24 Sep 2018 by Lesley Kroenke

Alice Alce Alse unknown, (NOT Thier, Tyer, nor Thayer, nor Coly) married Thomas Hollowell about 1646, who came from England by 1645 to Virginia Colony. They raised ten children and lived on a farm on the banks of the Broad Creek and Sedge Creek, and West Bank of Elizabeth River in Lower Norfolk, Va. They were of the Quaker faith and very active in their faith. There are many Quaker records for this family. She out lived Thomas 13 yrs. Alice is my 8th Great Grandmother.

NOTE. Alice was married only once to Thomas Hollowell, no other spouses no other children..All of their children are listed in the Quaker records and verified.

NOTE. Alice is NOT the daughter of Richard Thayer and Dorothy Mortimer. Her parents are unproven.

Her name is not Mary Alice, others have combined names with no proof. She was always listed as Alice,Alise,Alce in all Quaker records.

(Early Quaker Records in Virginia, Miles White, Jr., p.50) Chuckatuck Monthly Meeting. 1700, 9, 19. Alice Hollowell, widow of Thomas Hollowell, deceased the Elder, departed this life this 19 day of the 9 mo. in the yeare 1700.

In the library of Friends' House in London, the Quaker "headquarters," there is a letter (Box MSS/38) "From our womans meeting in the western Branch of Nansemund River in Virginia; to the woman's meetings in England, in the County of Swarthmore, London, Bristall or else where wee Massachusetts bee received in the House of God &c." The body of the letter is entirely religious, with nothing about Virginia or the signers of the letter, but because of the loss of the Nansemond records and the loss of many of the Quaker records of this period, the names themselves are important to genealogists. Friends' House graciously granted permission to publish the letter, in whole or in part. The following is taken verbatim from the letter, although the religious preoration is omitted: "This was ordered of our woman's meeting in the western branch of Nancimum in Virginia to be writen & sent to the womans meetings in England. The 11: of the: 4: month: 1679.
