Aldena Almarode Fleming Sipe completed her earthly journey on Tuesday, July 13, 2010, with her daughters and in the loving care of the staff at Mountain View Nursing, Aroda, Va.

Mama Dena or Grandma Dena, as she was known to many, was born Dec. 11, 1917, in Augusta County to Ernest Thomas and Martha Fitzgerald Almarode.
She was a graduate of Stuarts Draft High School.
She volunteered at Woodrow Wilson Army Hospital during World War II, employed as assistant dietitian at Waynesboro Community Hospital, occupational instructor at Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center in Fishersville and companion and caregiver to several households before her retirement. First missionary to be commissioned from Mountain View Mennonite Church, she served in Jamaica as a matron in a girls' home.

In addition to her parents, V.J. Fleming and Joseph Sipe, she was preceded in death by a sister, Leona Almarode Whitesell and two brothers, Leroy and George Thomas Almarode. Surviving is a sister, Florence Almarode Peters and her husband, Glenn, of Roanoke. Also surviving are two daughters, Mae Wilson Fleming Palmer and Ann Armstrong, both of Fishersville; five granddaughters, Dawn Palmer Young and husband, Ronald, of Fishersville, Robyne Hoy Weisensale of Sarasota, Fla., Toni Hoy of Aiea, Hawaii, Belinda Armstrong of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Jackie Armstrong of Staunton; seven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren, and a number of special nieces and nephews and stepchildren.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Building Fund of Cornerstone Church of Augusta, 1156 Tinkling Spring Road, Staunton, Va. 24401, where she was the oldest member.

The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of Mountain View Nursing Home and Gentle Shepherd Hospice, as well as to friends of her church family, the church family of First Baptist Church, friends at Gypsy Hill House and many other family and friends who were so faithful with calls, cards and prayers.

By her choice, her body has been donated to Virginia Anatomical Program. A Celebration of Life service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 17, 2010, at her beloved Cornerstone Church of Augusta.
