About Alewyn Smit

Not him killed in fight with Jacob Cloete in 1696 -- On 1st October 1696 Jan Smit was insulted by Jacob Cloete. Enraged, Smit drew his rapier, but Cloete evaded the blows and clouted Smit with a piece of wood, beat him with his fists and kicked his chest, shouting: 'Lie there, you dog!'. Within a very few days, during which he suffered continual pain in his chest, Jan Smit died.

In 1713 he was workiing as a hired hand for Jacobus van Eden according to the estate accounts of the latter (Aan Alewijn Smit over verdiende knegts loon ... f.21 - MOOC 13/1/1, 62).

He was described as 'Alewijn Smit de oude' in his and his wife's joint will of 1774.

This will makes mention only of two of their children, Jacobus and Johannes Petrus.

Although De Villiers/Pama, in the Geslagsregister van Ou Kaapse Families, 1961, gives him a second wife in 1756, he was, in fact, survived by his wife Hester Bekker who died in 1777 according to the death rolls of the Master of the Orphan Chamber in Cape Town.

Biography

Notice ===:: [Citing Richard Ball]: "Although some of these gigantic families are genuine enough, I have found others to be the creations of genealogists (see AlewijnSmit d'oude (Smit-160|Alewijn Smit d'oude -160) and Alewijn Smit Jacobusz(Smit-53|Alewijn Smit-53): for instance, who are treated as one person in De Villies/Pama). A little more reading in DeV/P revealedthat Gerrit's third wife was the daughter of his first wife, his own step-daughter! I felt almost certain that such a marriage would not have been allowed under the marriage laws of the time so I consulted theSouth Afican Archives online index (NAAIRS) to find what documents I might order from the Cape to establish the facts about these people." <ref>Source: Ballfamilyrecords.co.uk/notes/ The first Van Wijks at the Cape of Good Hope: an introduction (Richard Ball) Seen and added Oct 28, 2015 by Van der Walt-440|Philip van der Walt.</ref>
