Biography

Alexander Bain was a Scottish boy who was about eight years old when he emigrated to Yarmouth in 1762 with his parents, but was orphaned when the ship sank. He was raised by John MacKinnon and his wife Sarah Perry until their deaths in 1774.

On December 12, 1774, he married Sarah Perry, the daughter of Moses Perry and Eleanor Ellis, who emigrated from Sandwich, Massachusetts to Yarmouth in 1761.

Their children included;

  1. Barbara, born November 19, 1775, who married Elijah Ely, June 30, 1794
  2. Alexander 2nd, born September 28, 1776, who married Bethiah Brown, daughter of James
  3. Moses, born April 2, 1779, who married Sarah and died at sea in 1850
  4. John, born March 10, 1781, who married Sarah Landers daughter of Jabez
  5. Sarah, born Jan 20, 1783, who married Israel Lovett, son of Andrew on Jan 13, 1803
  6. Samuel, born November 14, 1785, who married Eunice Landers daughter of Jabez, and then married Hannah Kelley, daughter of James 1st
  7. William, born April 10, 1787, who married Asenath Porter, daughter of Hezekiah
  8. Joseph, born February 9, 1788, who married Mary Corning, daughter of David
  9. Eleanor, born September 13,1792, who married William Dodge, and then married Benjamin Porter son of Josiah 2nd
  10. Anna, born May 27, 1795, who married Capt Joseph Shaw

He married, as his second wife, Elizabeth Scott, between 1795 and 1805, based on the birth dates of his children.

They had the following children:

  1. Elizabeth, born 24 June 1806, who married Homes Chipman
  2. Rebecca, born 20 December 1808, who first married William T. Raymond, son of John, and second married Samuel Wheeland
  3. Hannah, born January 1811, who married Capt. Milford M. Flint, son of David
  4. Emily, born about 1813, who married Amos H. Pitman
  5. Jane, who married Benjamin, son of Benjamin Goudy

Alexander was still living in Yarmouth in 1827. Neither his wife nor his children were enumerated with him.

Alexander Bain died after 1827. Numerous unsourced family trees give a death date of 2 Apr 1831. His second wife, Elizabeth, is buried in the Yarmouth Mountain Cemetery, along with his son John. It is possible that he is there, as well.
