III. 1. ALEXANDER CLINTON, eldest son of General James, b. at Deerpark, in Orange County, in 1765, was drowned while crossing the Hudson, at Bull’s Ferry, March 15, 1787, in his twenty-second year. He became a lieutenant in Colonel Lamb's regiment of artillery, and had some active service. He was an aid and private secretary to his uncle George, when Governor, and was much beloved and respected.
