Sir Alexander Dunbar was known as Alexander Dunbar of Westfield. He was born illegitimate circa 1425 at Scotland. He was the only son of James 4th Earl of Moray. He was the son of James Dunbar 4th Earl of Moray and Isabel Innes (Dunbar).

His half-sister Elizabeth, wife of Archibald Douglas obtained the Earldom; but Alexander however, got from the crown a large estate, was knighted and created Heritable Sheriff of Moray. He had the lands of Conzie, Durrisk, Moyness, Tarrus, Carnausie, Clana, part of Fachabers and others and had several charters from James II. He obtained in 1450 from Archibald Douglas, Earl of Moray, a charter of the lands and barony of Westfield and other estates. He also received lands from his sister Janet, Countess of Moray. The two eldest of Sir Alexander's 6 sons married Anne-Eupheme and Margaret, the two eldest daughters and co-heirs of Patrick Dunbar of Mochrum and founded the long lines of Westfield and Mochrum.
