Letter from Alexander Hamilton Willard to Mary Colista Elinor Willard dated 7 Sep 1896 and written from Willows, Glenn County, California, "I received your letter a few days since and in reply to your request for information in regard to family history fear that I can afford you but little. So near as my recollection goes, Grandfather was born about the year 1779 at what place I do not know. He was married in 1806 and was I have understood twenty eight years old at that time. He was I believe 86 years old when he died that is my recollection. Grandmother Willard was six or eight years younger and was born and married at St. Genevieve St. Louis Co. Missouri. They had born to them twelve children seven boys and five girls. Eleven of them lived to maturity one died when young, Willis. The sons were Austin J., George, Hamilton, Roland, Joel, Lewis and Willis. The daughters were Christiana, Eliza, Nancy, Narcissa, & Ellen. You know Grandmother's maiden name was McDonald. But three of them are now living Lewis & Eliza Hartsough, Ellen Downey. I will send your letter to Aunt Eliza as you request. I think Sister Leland [spelling?] has answered all your letters that have reached her. Mrs. Gilmour spent several months in Arizona most of the time at Uncle Lewis and she ought to have obtained from Uncle Lewis a valuable fund of information if that was what she was seeking. Uncle Lewis is the best living authority. He has in his possession dates and facts that are not known to others. Grandfather had a printed publication in regard to the trip of Lewis & Clark containing a daily account of their adventures. I have heard Grandmother and others read it to him and he was delighted to hear the story again told. You say that so many desire to be mentioned that it may cause some confusion. For one I do not share in the desire. I would not give a penny to have every man woman and child in America know that I was the grandson of one of the men who went with Lewis & Clark. I would not give a fig to know if I was the great grandson of Simon Willard or any one else. Grandfather crossed the Plains in 1852, had no trouble with indians or any adventure worth relating. While I do not sympathize with you as perhaps you think I should, yet I would assist you if I could. As ever, A. H. Willard."85 Land Buy: Alexander Hamilton Willard, called bought for $150 in gold coin: lots numbers 27 and 29 in Block #7 from Wm. C. Murdock 28 Apr 1897 in Willows, Glenn County, California.86

1900 Census: Alexander Hamilton Willard, called Alexander H. Willard, appeared on the census of 1900 in the household of his brother-in-law and sister, James Willie Robertson and Clara B. Willard, at First Judicial Township, Glenn County, California, aged 67, a farmer.87

Letter from Alexander Hamilton Willard to Mary Colista Elinor Willard dated 27 Mar 1903 and written from Willows, Glenn County, California, Dear Cousin, Your letter of recent date received and I will try to answer your questions in the order you have suggested them. To the first question he is buried at the village of Georgetown in Sacramento county where is buried his wife Eleanor nee Mcdonald, his son Roland and two daughters. Georgetown is 15 miles south of Sacramento City. Do not know if there is any monument to mark his grave. The second question did his son Roland leave him a rich man. To this question I should say no. Roland was well off but not rich. His estate I think was valued at eight thousand dollars. The reason I have heard that moved him to go with the expedition was one of adventure, a desire to see and learn of things unknown. When I was a boy just beginning to read I remember to have seen and read a book that purported to be the diary of Capt. Lewis who was the leading spirit of the enterprise. It belonged in the family. I have heard Grandfather speak of them in aswer to your questions from others. Many of the most important matters referred to he remembered. He was always delighted to have the children read from it and seemed delighted when they were revived in memory. As I remember him he was a plain and unassuming man willing to work and labor for that he believed was right and allow others to receive credit for it. I am not sure he started from Kentucky. He was a native of New Hampshire of this I am sure as I can be of any fact connected with his history. He was young when he left home sixteen I believe. He was I think a gunsmith blacksmith and sometime hunter. The chief hunter for the expedition was a man named Fields. Have heard Grandfather tell of his adventures after game as the helper of Fields. He died at Georgetown where he was buried at the age I think of 86. He was married in 1806 in St. Louis Co. Of his parents I can tell you nothing. He visited his relatives who still lived in New Hampshire about the year 1840 and was absent from his home in Wisconsin about four months. So far as I know he never received any land or extra compensation from the government. I have tried to answer your questions to the best of my knowledge and hope to your satisfaction. If they will be of any service to you I am glad to give them to you. We are all in our usual health. Sister Leland is not well and has not been for many months. Am sorry to hear that Aunt is so feeble. Hope the Lord will be merciful to her and give her strength to meet the end. As ever, A. H. Willard."88 Land Buy: Alexander Hamilton Willard, called bought for $20 in gold coin: block #32 from Laurel Lodge No. 245 4 Jan 1904 in Masonic Cemetery Grounds, Willows, Glenn County, California.
