AUSTIN JAMES2 WILLARD (Alexander-1) was born on 23 Jan 1808 at Louisiana Territory, now Missouri.1,2,3,4,5,6,7 He married Maria Clay Tweedy on 15 Feb 1831 at St. Louis county, Missouri.8,9,10,11 He died on 3 Dec 1888 at near the Willows, (modern Willows), Colusa county (modern Glenn county), California, at age 80.12,13 He was buried in the Willows Cemetery, Masonic block #32, Grave J, Willows, Glenn County, California.14

Austin James Willard can be found as WFA Genealogy #947a in the 1989 Henry-2 Supplement in Willard Genealogy; Sequel to Willard Memoir (1915).15

He was a Private, in Captain Dodge's Company, Illinois Militia, in the Black Hawk War of 1832.16

1836 Census: Austin James Willard appeared on the census of 1836 at District No. 3, Elk Grove Election Precinct, Iowa county, Wisconsin Territory.17

Austin James Willard bought the NE quarter of the NE quarter of Section 3 T2N R1E consisting of 48.26 acres from Mineral Point General Land Office 8 Jul 1839 in Iowa County, Wisconsin Territory, located 1/2 mile north of the land owned by his younger brother, Roland, and his Christiana & her husband John Crawford.18

"Among the settlers who located in the township of Elk Grove from 1840 to 1845 was... Austin Willard."19

1842 Census: Austin James Willard appeared on the census of 1842 at Ranges 1 & 2, Western Division, Iowa county, Wisconsin Territory. There were 5 white males and 3 white females in "Austin J. Willard"s household. The census enumerator visited the household of "Austin J. Willard", then someone else, then "James N. Stores" then "John R. Crawford" then "Alexander Willard" then "Joshua Mcdonald" then "A. H. Willard" then "Martha Wakefield", then someone else, then "John Hartsough."20

Land Buy: Austin James Willard bought the undivided half of the east half of the SE quarter of section 3 in T5N R1E containing 80 acres for $50 from John M. Jones 15 Feb 1844 in Iowa County, Wisconsin Territory.21

On 14 October 1845 Austin James Willard and Maria C. Willard his wife gave a deed to his brother Alexander on the 48+ acres. This was apparently merely the surety for a loan, as Alexander Hamilton Willard and his wife Mary Ann Willard transferred it back to Austin on 26 September 1846 for $625. The price fuels suspicion that this was mineral-bearing land as farmland was worth $1.25 per acre.22

1846 Census: Austin James Willard appeared on the census of 1846 at District No. 1, Iowa county, Wisconsin Territory. There are 3 white males and 3 white females in A. J. Willard's household. The census enumerator visited the household of "G. W. Wakefield", visited someone else, then "A. H. Willard" then "A. J. Willard", then two other households, then "John R. Crawford", then another household then "A. Willard."23

Land Buy: Austin James Willard bought the NW quarter of the NW quarter of Section 2 T2N R1E containing 48.27 acres for $100 from Elijah Lockett 15 Mar 1847 in Iowa County, Wisconsin Territory.24

Spring 1847 Census: Austin James Willard appeared on the census of Spring 1847 at Lafayette county, Wisconsin Territory. There are 6 persons in Austin Willard's household. The census enumerator counted "A. H. Willard", then another house, then "George Wakefield", then another house, then "Austin Willard" then "Alexander Willard" then "John Crawford."25

Land Buy: Austin James Willard bought the parcel of land which is a part of the SW quarter of the NE quarter of Section 15 in T3N R1W and designated as lot #29 containing 0.49 acre for $245 from John Prenery 31 Aug 1847 in Platteville, Grant, Wisconsin Territory.26

1850 Census: Austin James Willard, called Austin J. Willard, and Maria Clay Tweedy, called Maria Willard, appeared on the census of 1850 living in the Eastern District #25, Platteville, Grant county, Wisconsin, with three children; Austin is 42, a farmer, with $500 real estate; Maria is 42.27

Before leaving for the gold fields of California, he gave his power of attorney to Isaac Hodges to sell the property in Platteville.

In 1850 "he crossed the plains to California with ox teams and in Sacramento engaged in trading in stock for a livelihood...&quot.28,29

Austin James Willard sold by Isaac Hodges "my attorney in fact", lot #29 in Carl's Addition for $220 to Randolph Snowdon 15 Feb 1851 in Platteville, Grant County, Wisconsin.30

Austin James Willard (with Alexander Jr, Joel, and Lewis) bought for $2,000: the East quarter of Lot #3 in the square between K and L Seventh and Eighth streets by 20 feet on K street and running back to the alley 160 feet bounded on the east by lot of Dr. McKenzie, on the West by lot of Prettyman Barroll & Co from William Grove Deal 19 May 1851 in Sacramento City, Sacramento county, California.31

MARIA CLAY TWEEDY was born on 10 Sep 1808 at Campbell county, Virginia.50,51,52,53,54 She died on 6 Apr 1883 at age 74.55 She was buried in the Willows Cemetery, Masonic block #32, Grave A, Willows, Glenn County, California.56 She was also known as Maria Young in material submitted to Ruth Willard, WFA Historian. She was also known as Marie Swedy on the death certificate for her son Alexander, filled out by her daughter, Clara.57

In 1849 Nancy's brothers Austin, Alexander Jr aka Hamilton, and Roland travel to NY and board a ship going around the tip of South America to San Francisco. Her sister Eliza Martha goes overland to the gold fields with her husband.

She died on August 14 near Salt Lake City. Notice the ages of David Feathers' children at this time. In the 1860 Census: Nell and William Sanderson are settled in Cottonwood near her Uncle Austin Willard, Uncle Alexander Jr., and her Aunt Eleanor. They were not far from where her Grandpa Alexander Sr was living in Franklin along with her Uncle Lewis. Living with Nell and William is her 8 year old brother Lewis Feathers aka Willie. 14 year old Jane Feathers is living with her Uncle Joel over in Clear Lake, where Joel was surveying for Napa County. It is unknown where 9 year old Kitty was living. It is unknown where David Feathers himself was.

Austin James Willard was the firstborn son of Alexander Hamilton Willard, Sr., and Eleanor (McDonald) Willard. He married Mariah Clay (Tweedy) on February 15, 1831, and had four children: Alexander Hamilton, Mary Calista, Eliza, and Clara B. Willard. In 1832, he served in the Black Hawk War.
