<p>Sailed from Gravesend, London, to South Africa in 1849 on the Royal Alice, arriving in Cape Town 3 August 1849. He kept a diary of his voyage. From Cape Town, he travelled by ship to Mossel Bay, then by wagon to George, where he was employed building the church there. Later he travelled around the Cape building other churches and bridges, including Belvidere Church near Knysna. In his diary and on his protrait, the name is spelled LAURENCE, but on his grave it is spelled LAWRENCE. Christina Gentle Laurence mentions that only her father John kept the original spelling with 'U'</p>
