About Alexander Newman
Records show he bought a large tract of land in 1699 in Lancaster County, formerly owned by John Newman the immigrant, and by him divised to his son John. On this land, he built a stone mill, which by accounts of other researchers is still standing.
In 1735 he leased a tract of land in Orange County on the south side of the Rapidan River from Alexander Spotswood " for three lives" himself and his sons, Thomas and James. There is a record at Warsaw, a deed dated 1737 from Alexander Newman of Orange County Virginia to Landon Carther, conveying the track of land devised by Henry Burdett. the elder to Thomas Newman and the court order showing the acknowledgment of the deed recites that Alexander was the heir at law of Thomas.
Alexander Newman was a member of the Grand Jury of Orange County Virginia in 1737 and is mentioned in several suits as late as 1760. Between 1740/1760 he and his wife Penelope were in a lawsuit, where she was seeking maintenance. She obtained a judgment against him and Elias Wilson Alexander's grandfather acknowledged himself surety for the payment of the money. She filed the suit in Richmond County after their separation, while it seems he was in Culpeper County.
The records of the time being hit and miss show only three sons for Alexander Elias, Thomas, and James no daughters.
